Do you smell that?

12 Mar

I think that the sense of smell triggers a special part of your brain. (There may or may not be scientific evidence to support this claim.) There are certain smells that take me back to a special memory. There are certain smells that calm me. There are certain smells that excite me. There are certain smells that just make me want to stop, close my eyes, and just breathe. Here is a list of some of my favorite smells.

My husband’s cologne – He wears a couple of different types, so it’s not one specific scent. It’s more the moment that I lay my head on his chest and breathe deep. It’s comforting, it’s familiar, it’s sexy, it’s home.
My children – There is something about the smell when they just come out of the shower; I always want to hug them, just to take in the scent of their freshly shampooed hair. And, there is something about the smell when they just come in from playing outside; a mixture of sunshine, wind, and laughter.
Freshly brewed coffee – or chai tea lattes. It’s the expectation of the cup of yumminess that I’m about to enjoy.
Fair food – That intoxicating smell of elephant ears, corn dogs, and summer. The one that takes you back to child hood and makes you want to hold hands with a boy on the midway. There’s no other food smell that gets my mouth-watering quite like that one.
New tennis balls – trust me. If you’ve never popped open a can of brand new tennis balls, you don’t know what you’re missing. When I played tennis in high school, we used to fight over who would be the one to open the new cans. (Warning: I’m not entirely sure what causes that smell, so I can’t be held responsible for the possible dying of brain cells.)

What’s your favorite smell and why?
